Hillside Commons is an off-campus luxury housing development serving students of SUNY Oneonta. For this project, Whitham Planning Design Landscape Architecture (WPD) designed site improvements for the enclosed courtyard in the center of the complex. Improvements involved a careful series of removals and additions to the existing concrete plaza to better capitalize on the limited space, as well as the addition of new amenities such as a fire pit and shade pergola. The new layout accommodates an expanded activity lawn and quiet hammock nooks. Outdoor kitchen areas feature built-in grills and pizza oven under overhead bistro-lighting. The previously existing landscape plantings were preserved and expanded upon to give this space a feeling of verdant enclosure.
