Ithaca Falls Overlook Visioning

Whitham Planning and Design developed this conceptual vision study to explore how public access could one day be restored to the north side of Ithaca Falls—one of the region's most iconic natural landmarks. Drawing inspiration from the site's rich history and dramatic landscape, the study imagined how an underutilized parcel could become a welcoming public overlook that reconnects visitors with Fall Creek while celebrating the area's cultural and industrial heritage.

The concept proposed a phased approach to creating a universally accessible park experience. An initial phase envisioned transforming the former residential property at 401 Lake Street into a small overlook park featuring accessible pathways, interpretive elements, a commemorative seating area, and carefully framed views of Ithaca Falls. A future phase explored the addition of an accessible upper overlook, expanded parking, trail connections, and elevated viewing platforms that would immerse visitors in the beauty of the gorge.

Environmental stewardship guided the conceptual design. The study proposed minimizing disturbance to the existing forest, protecting sensitive slopes through elevated structures, removing invasive vegetation, and introducing native plantings to improve habitat and long-term ecological resilience. Materials such as corten steel and wood were envisioned to reflect the industrial history of Fall Creek while complementing the surrounding natural landscape.

The visioning study reveals how balancing accessibility, ecological restoration, historic interpretation, and thoughtful placemakingcan lead to opportunities to reconnect communities with significant natural and cultural resources while inspiring future investment in public spaces.
