Experienced Landscape Designer/Landscape Architect

Whitham Planning and Design PLLC is a landscape architecture, planning, and project management firm located in downtown Ithaca, New York. The ideal applicants are curious and well-rounded, with an interest in a broad range of project management, landscape architecture, and planning tasks at a small, dynamic, and collaborative firm based in downtown Ithaca, NY


Entry Level and Experienced Landscape Designers/Architect

Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, management, and production of drawings for projects at large and small scales and during all stages of the design process, from conceptual development through construction documentation;

  • Compilation of targeted project research and analysis into text documents and/or design solutions;

  • Preparation of and the ability to give verbal and visual presentations to client, municipal, and community audiences;

  • Coordination between clients and consultant teams;

  • Preparation of project proposals, contracts, and cost estimates;

  • Preparation of Site Plan Review, SEQR, Zoning, and other approvals and entitlements documentation;

  • The position will require approximately 40 hours per week, with some evening meetings.


Desired Qualifications:

  • A professional Landscape Architecture degree;

  • Demonstrated ability in site planning and design, design detail, and project coordination;

  • Strong design and writing skills, including the development and synthesis of site research and concept development;

  • Clear communication, organization, and presentation skills;

  • Effective time management ability with attention to detail;

  • Other degrees in allied design disciplines, such as in planning or architecture;

  • Experience with municipal review processes, including Site Plan, SEQR, and Zoning Review;

  • Project management and coordination experience;

  • Ability to self-direct and collaborate with project teams.


Desired Software Fluency:

  • AutoCAD to create site, layout, landscape, and detail plan sheets;

  • Microsoft Word to write professional memos and other documents;

  • Adobe InDesign to create presentations, submission packages, documents, etc.;

  • Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator to create diagrams and plan, section, and perspective renderings, etc.;

  • Google SketchUp to create site models, renderings, animations, etc.;

  • Microsoft Excel to create budget spreadsheets, materials schedules, etc.;

  • Working knowledge of online applications such as Google Docs, etc.

Landscape Intern, 2-3 positions available

Experience in landscape design, project research, and project coordination for small, mid-size, and large development projects is preferred. The ideal candidate will have at minimum 2-3 years’ educational experience, and will have worked in some capacity in a landscape architecture firm. The position will require approximately 40 hours per week, with the potential for evening meetings.  

Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, management, and production of drawings for projects of different scales and different stages in the design process;

  • Compilation of targeted project research and analysis into text documents and/or design solutions;

  • Preparation of verbal, visual, and oral presentations for clients, municipal staff and boards, community members, etc.;

  • Coordination between clients, consultant teams, and manufacturers;

  • Preparation of cost estimates for upcoming projects

  • Preparation of building permit, zoning, Site Plan Review, SEQR, etc. documentation and applications

Required Qualifications:

  • A professional Landscape Architecture degree, complete or in progress

  • Demonstrated ability in Site Planning and Design, Design Detail

  • Strong design and writing skills

  • Clear communication, organization, and presentation skills

  • Effective time management ability with attention to detail

Desired Qualifications:

  • Other degrees in allied design disciplines, such as in planning or architecture

  • Experience with municipal review processes, including Site Plan, SEQR/A, and Zoning Review

  • Project experience
